Class: Hedgehogs Year: 2020 - 2021

Hi everyone,

I hope you are all doing well.  Firstly, I'd just like to say a big thank you for all of your support this week with children returning back to school. It has been so lovely to see everyone again.  After feedback from parents many of you said that you really enjoyed getting to know in more detail what your children were learning at school so I wanted to take the time to share with you on here each week what we have been learning so that this can continue.

Maths - this week we have been learning about halving objects, shapes and quantities.  We explored halving different objects such as bread as bread and string, we halved paper shapes and shaded in half of shapes.  We then helped Thomas Farriner deliver bread to King Charles and Samuel Pepys by helping him find half of the amount he baked.

English - we have practised our ladder letters - l, i, j, t, u and y.  We found SPaG features in  our new genre of writing 'story openers' inlcuding spotting adjectives and different punctuation.  We then wrote sentences using different punctuation (full stops, question marks and exclamation marks)  to show what a character might be saying from a page of Billy and the Dragon.

Wider curriculum -

RSHE - We thought all about the emotion of happiness, we thought about what makes us happy and designed our own happy monters and thought about how we feel when we are happy.

History - we looked at different emergency vehicles from the past and present, and considered how we knew if they were from the past or present.  We then considered how emergency vehicles have changed over time and why they might have done so.

For example Fire engines are bigger today so they can carry more equipment.

PE - gymnastics, we recapped the five strong shapes (tuck, pike, straight, star and straddle) we then practised balancing with control on different parts of our body trying to hold the balance for 5 seconds.  We then recapped travelling in different ways and at different levels (high and low).

We have also chosen a new class book for our story time of George's Marvellous Medicine which we have really enjoyed listening too.

The Hedgehogs have all worked really hard this week, and I am very proud of all of the effort they have put in and how resilient they have all been.  We celebrated our successes with a biscuit party on Friday afternoon.

I can't wait to see everyone again next week for some more exciting learning.

Best wishes

Miss Sutherland
