DOBCROFT NURSERY INFANT SCHOOL

Intent Implementation & Impact

Intent:

Through our Relationship and Health education (RHE), we intend to give children the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy and independent lives. We aim to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We also teach  our children how to make healthy choices and lead a healthy lifestyle.

Implement:

At Dobcroft Infant School children take part in dedicated RHE teaching sessions each week from FS2 to Year 2. However, RHE is also embedded within the school ethos and wider Personal Development. RHE is an inter-connected subject, with clear links to RE through discussion about culture, PE through healthy diets, music through talking about how music makes us feel, and Philosophy 4 Children where we discuss 'big questions'.

We do a lot of our teaching through stories, thinking about being inclusive of all family types, cultures and how to recognise and manage different feelings and emotions. Our pupils take turns sharing and building on others' ideas and opinions. We teach the children that it is okay to have a different opinion to others, but that we should be respectful and polite even when disagreeing.

Whole school themes:

  • Community
  • Friends
  • Family/ online safety
  • Feelings
  • Staying healthy
  • Growing up.

The children at Dobcroft Nursery Infant School focus on a different whole school theme each half term and children have a weekly circle time session.  In the Foundation Stage PSED is a prime area of learning and connects the whole curriculum. Through positive relationships with adults, children learn what their emotions are, how to regulate them and how relationships with their peers work.

In each classroom, there is a Put It Right area, with a turnaround table full of calming Down tricks, Problem Solving tips, at urnaround box with fiddle toys and other stress-relieving ideas. We teach children to identify and name their emotions using the zones of regulation. This enables the children to recognise how they are feeling. We teach the children that it is ok to feel a range of different emotions and give them the tools they need to regulate themselves when necessary.

We revisit out calming down tricks, stop calm do problem solving and our zones of regulation each half term.

Our children are rewarded for following the School Values with praise, smiles, stickers and Golden Moments. Golden Moments are collected as a class and celebrated in our whole school assembly. In Foundation Stage, the class collect bees as a whole class reward system. In Key Stage 1, each pupil is also recognised individually with Rainbow Points.

We teach the children to be independent learners and help the children to develop these skills using our learning seals. These are displayed in each classroom and are used by all children and staff. The children will learn to:

  • Be reflective
  • Be resilient
  • Be a risktakers
  • Be resourceful
  • Be reciprocal
