Intent Implementation & Impact
Intent:
Through our Personal, Social and Health education (PSHE), we intend to give children the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy and independent lives. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. It also teaches children about healthy choices and a healthy lifestyle.
Our School Values summarise the behaviour for learning that we expect all our pupils to uphold.
- We enjoy learning
- We try our best
- We make good choices
- We respect each other and our surroundings
- We work together
- We celebrate our successes.
Implement:
At Dobcroft Infant School children take part in dedicated PSHE teaching and it is also embedded within the school ethos. PSHE is also a inter-connected subject, with clear links to RE through discussion about culture, PE through healthy diets, music through talking about how music makes us feel, and Philosophy 4 Children where we discuss 'big questions'.
We do a lot of our teaching through stories, thinking about being inclusive of all family types, cultures and how to recognise and manage different feelings and emotions. Our pupils take turns sharing and building on others' ideas and opinions. We teach the children that it is okay to have a different opinion to others, but that we should be respectful and polite even when disagreeing.
In Foundation Stage we focus on a different whole school theme each half term and children have a weekly circle time session. PSED is a prime area of learning and connects the whole curriculum. Through positive relationships with adults, children learn what their motions are, how to regulate them and how relationships with their peers work.
Whole school themes:
Community
Friends
Family/ online safety
Staying healthy
Growing up.
In Key Stage 1, we follow the Learn Sheffield curriculum, which again is broken down into 6 areas - one for each half-term.
In each classroom, there is a Put It Right area, with a Turnaround table full of Calming Down Tricks, Problem Solving tips, aTurnaround Box with fiddle toys and other stress-relieving ideas. We teach children to identify and name their emotions, and try and get themselves "ready to learn" in the Put It Right area if needed.
Our children are rewarded for following the School Values with praise, smiles, stickers and Golden Moments. Golden Moments are collected as a class and celebrated in our whole school assembly. In Foundation Stage, the class collect bees as a whole class reward system. In Key Stage 1, each pupil is also recognised individually with Rainbow Points.
